Dear
2008 Presidential Candidates,
Physical
barriers prevent wheelchair access. Invisible barriers such as toxic
chemicals, pesticides, scented products, toxic mold, etc prevent access to
public facilities, schools, places of employment, hospitals, medical &
dental care facilities, emergency, assisted & residential housing, to those
with toxically induced & exacerbated illnesses & disabilities; access necessary
for survival.
We,
the toxically injured, are an often unseen (due to medical need for isolation),
misunderstood; yet an enormous and unfortunately rapidly growing population of
disabled citizens of all ages and backgrounds. While our
disability may be more complex than some, this does not make our lives any less
valuable, less important, nor disposable. The ADA recognizes us as the,
“… fastest growing segment of the disabled population.” ADA Region 10,
2004, 2005, 2008.
If
elected President, what will you do to stop the poisoning?
If
elected President, would you acknowledge and stop the discrimination against
those with toxically induced/ exacerbated illnesses and disabilities?
Would
you guarantee our right to public access?
Would
you implement "fast track" programs to provide the assistance to the
toxically injured that that they so desperately need, that have been so
abusively denied or delayed?
How
will you address the prejudicial, discriminatory and bigoted attitudes that we
daily encounter from public services?
For
the record, toxic injury is non-partisan. It cripples Democrats &
Republicans, liberals and conservatives. It transcends the boundaries of
race, color, creed, economic level, social status, educational status, age,
gender, urban or rural dweller, blue or white collar, or even sexual preference.
It is, tongue in cheek, an equal opportunity disability. The members of our
group come from all walks of life and represent the most diverse demographics.
Dr.
John Green a specialist in neuro-degenerative diseases in children says, "6
out of 10 children suffers from a neurologic condition due to toxins. We are no
longer the minority." DAN Seattle seminar 2006. He was talking about
consumer product and environmental toxins. That's 60% of our children. That's
just the percentage with neurologic conditions. Other speakers at the same
conference linked all childhood cancers to consumer product and environmental
toxins. The same is true for birth defects, as studies show adult body burden of
toxins are transferred to the fetus and have been measured in umbilical chord
blood. Those facts are horrifying enough, but we haven't even begun to discuss
the same facts in the adult populations. 95% of adults have blood serum levels
of BPA that cause changes on 200 genes. (EPA), there are no beneficial genetic
changes. Genetic damage leads to disability and illness. This is an issue that
everyone needs to take seriously. BPA is just one of the hundreds of toxins
found in adult body burden studies. There are millions of toxins, only a
handful, are measured.
We,
as a country, need education and awareness of our condition, so that others
recognize and make the accommodations that those with this disability, so
desperately need and are entitled to. Our state and national laws, policies and
procedures are already in place, guaranteeing that we are able to remain active,
contributing citizens. Unfortunately, due to prejudicial perceptions we are
being denied those rights.
*
More importantly, we need to change our ideas and practices to protect all our
citizens, our children, our pets, our livestock, our agriculture, our industry
and our environment. No one can afford to continue using consumer product or
environmental toxins. The price tag is too high, and the bill is coming due. The
rapidly increasing numbers of those disabled by Toxically Injured testify to
that.
Please
respond ASAP ~ we may have to vote “absentee” ballots, but vote we will. Who
we will vote for depends on your response.
Sincerely,
your friends in Hope & Health,
Peggy, Julia, and Jennifer
